Østersøen is a music video I directed for my band Ödland at the time of the album Sankta Lucia.
This project is especially meaningful to me. Not only did I create it with my friend, illustrator Vincent Pianina (in the kitchen of our flat!) to bring to life a song I wrote and composed, but we also extensively experimented with paper‑model animation techniques. Those experiments proved formative for my later work and further collaborations with Vincent. We used similar techniques, for instance, for the opening titles of Les Aventuriers de l’art moderne (also in our kitchen!). For me, Østersøen is a key milestone.

Behind the scenes & anecdote
This film (starring a traveller in a sleeper cabin inside a boat, trying to avoid the islands of the Baltic Sea) was screened at the Bornshorts Festival on Bornholm (a Danish island in the Baltic). Vincent and I went to present it in a small cinema‑theatre whose colours matched the video — after taking a boat that also matched the video. A perfect mise en abyme.
We didn’t win the prize in the end, but we did visit Stavehøl, the highest waterfall in Denmark: a towering 3 metres — impressive in its own way!
