The Sleeping Towers — Paper Dublin

First piece in the Paper Dublin series

I have big news to share — I’ve moved to Ireland!

After many years of life, work, and collaboration in Lyon, I decided to settle in a land I already know well: the Irish countryside. Of course, I’ll continue to work with France, my native country — but this move opens a new chapter. A new life, full of inspiration, adventure, and quiet joy.

Since my arrival, an old project has resurfaced — one I had set aside for a while.
Paper Dublin, the paper city I once began to build.

The project had been dormant for years, but it never really left me.
Bringing it back was an obvious step — but with a sharper eye, a deeper intent.
I’m not aiming to make small models of Dublin. I’m trying to translate atmospheres, emotions, fragmented memories.
To reopen the story, I started with a simple and haunting image: two chimneys standing at the water’s edge.

This piece is called The Sleeping Towers.

Two remnants of the past

These chimneys — remnants of an industrial landscape visible from the jetty east of Dublin — evoke a paradoxical feeling. They repel me, because they’re symbols of pollution and harm.
But at the same time, they irresistibly draw the eye.
Tall, still, and silent — they seem to stand between menace and memory.

Everyone in Ireland knows them. They’re the first signs of civilisation you see when arriving in Dublin — whether by plane or by sea.
Starting with these towers made perfect sense.

Reimagining, not reproducing

This is not about accuracy. I didn’t want to be faithful to every detail. I chose instead to create a vision.

I exaggerated the verticality, narrowed the colour palette, and unified the surrounding buildings into one coherent block.
Rust tones meet a pale grey-blue sky.
The whole becomes a floating monolith, a quiet daydream — a memory of rust and wind, rather than a documentary portrait.

Small scale, big schift

Working with imposing structures in a small paper box creates a poetic contrast that I enjoy.
It’s a landscape you can hold in your hands — where depth emerges from layers and shadow.

There’s no added light: the piece lives through natural light, which reveals its reliefs beautifully throughout the day.

About the title

The Sleeping Towers suggests a kind of giant slumber — almost volcanic.
The site itself has partly changed function, but its presence hasn’t faded.
The system that created it still exists, more than ever.
The towers remain, asleep and upright — watching us as much as we watch them.

I associate this piece with long walks to the sea wall: a kind of non-place, between salt air and industrial debris.
It’s desolate and peaceful all at once — a space that clears your head.
Paper Dublin was born from that atmosphere.

What’s next?

Paper Dublin  will continue to explore real and imaginary architecture, with Dublin as a starting point — and Ireland as a space for fiction.

I’ll use this blog to share sketches, works in progress, studio images, and poetic fragments from future pieces.

See you soon for the next one.

The Sleeping Towers is available now in my online shop — framed, signed, ready to hang.
