A multidisciplinary artist, Lorenzo Papace creates works where music, visual arts, and scenography meet.
His singular universe — at the crossroads of dream, melancholy, and the fantastical — is nourished by an intimate and poetic exploration of the margins: the strange, industrial ruins, European folklore, nature, and adventure.
His projects combine aesthetic depth, social engagement, and political sensitivity. Beyond creation, he defends a radically critical artistic vision of industrial civilization and advocates resistance to the standardization of the world and the destruction of nature.
Born in Lyon, Lorenzo Papace grew up in a difficult environment. Orphaned at the age of four following a feminicide, he was raised within a religious sect.
Art and nature became essential refuges, two elements that would deeply shape his path.
Introduced early to the piano, he developed a strong connection to classical music and jazz. Hiking and the discovery of wild landscapes nurtured his practice and worldview.
At seventeen, he left the Jehovah’s Witnesses, embarking on a path toward freedom and independence.
He studied Applied Arts at La Martinière Diderot in Lyon, then pursued a BTS in Spatial Design and a DSAA in Interior Architecture.
There, he forged an aesthetic and political approach to design, rooted in a deep sensitivity to materials and a critical awareness of social and ecological issues.
His thinking is shaped by atheism, anarchism, radical ecology, and feminism.
Through his work, he questions humanity’s place within an industrialized world and seeks to propose creative and poetic alternatives to technological standardization.
In 2008, Lorenzo founded the musical group Ödland (from the German “wasteland” or “desert”), where he develops a mysterious, melancholic, often dark universe, sometimes tinged with humor.
Ödland is inspired by tales, journeys, acoustic instruments (piano, violin, mandolin, flute, cello), and repurposed objects (toys, tape recorders, etc.).
Ödland is an imaginary land.
Its forgotten folklore, told through richly melodic and colorful songs, is carried by classical instruments such as the piano, flute, violin, and cello.
Ödland invites listeners to explore submerged and abandoned worlds, where beauty and unease intertwine.
The group is also a poetic laboratory to explore themes such as history, adventure, environmental devastation, oblivion, and the quest for freedom.
In 2024, Lorenzo continued this adventure by composing Des vagues, a musical theater piece that extends his musical reflection into a theatrical format.
This work, both visual and musical, reflects his commitment to complete storytelling, where stagecraft, music, and visual arts converge to create an immersive and emotional experience.
Alongside his musical work, Lorenzo Papace has also established himself as a visual artist and scenographer.
He has developed a unique technique using paper cut-outs, creating sensitive three-dimensional worlds where stop-motion animation, mechanical installations, photography, and visual poetry meet.
This craftsmanship is fully expressed in his music videos and numerous collaborations with prestigious institutions and brands.
In 2016, he designed the Christmas window displays for Galeries Lafayette, made entirely of paper.
Other collaborations include Arte, Hermès, the Musée d’Orsay, Miu Miu, Nike, and the Cité des Sciences, where his plastic creations engage with contemporary issues.
As an engaged artist, Lorenzo Papace also uses his art to serve a political and poetic critique of industrial civilization and dominant structures.
In 2018, he created L’École du Chat Noir, a stop-motion series that popularizes anarchist thought.
In 2019, he co-founded Floraisons, a podcast dedicated to radical ecology.
He is actively involved with anarchist and ecofeminist collectives, anchoring his practice within a broader intellectual and emotional resistance movement.
He is also the founder of the CNT-STAA, the Union of Artists and Authors Workers, advocating for continuous income rights for all artists.
Lorenzo does not merely denounce — he acts.
Through his creative workshops, notably at La Martinière Terreaux in Lyon, he shares his artisanal know-how and ecological reflections with new generations of designers.
He encourages them to rethink the relationship to materiality and art in an age increasingly dominated by technology.
His interventions at festivals such as Motion Motion offer opportunities to transmit a handcrafted approach to animation and design.
Lorenzo Papace brings his expertise to artistic, cultural, and commercial projects.
With experience as a composer, director, scenographer, and artistic director, he is open to new collaborations.
His ability to create unique visual worlds, his sensitivity to dramaturgy and music, and his political commitment make him a preferred partner for projects that seek both poetry and meaning.
He fully commits to projects that share his values: resisting standardization, seeking beauty in imperfection, and responding to the ecological emergency.
His work is a quest for freedom, where art and nature meet to give birth to creations that are sensitive, committed, and profoundly human.
I am open to artistic commissions, residencies, scenographic, video, or musical collaborations.
