Bagenalstown, County Carlow — 2026
Paper Bagenalstown is an artist-led, place-based paper architecture project conceived by visual artist and scenographer Lorenzo Papace and collectively developed with participants from Óige Neurodivergent Hangout, Parents and Children.
Inspired by the visual language of Irish small-town architecture, the project combined simplified house models with individual choices of colour, detail and placement.
Roads, gardens, railway lines, vehicles, a river and named buildings gradually connected the separate contributions into a shared paper landscape.
Developed as a pilot, the project evolved with its participants.
Simplified paper models with pre-cut elements enabled quick building while allowing personal variation. Participants engaged in different ways (building, customising, placing or observing) at their own pace.
Individual pieces gradually formed a shared landscape, using architecture as a common language.
The completed town blends a unified architectural style with individual contributions.
Repetition creates rhythm, while variations in colour and detail preserve each participant’s input. The paper medium keeps the town recognisable yet open to imagination.
Favourite places were often those participants created or imagined:
“My house. Because it is my house.”
“The dance school. Because I go to dance school.”
